The founding team

Our Story

In 2021, Tyll Utesch, Max Webers, Jonas Heuer, and Philipp Arbter (L to R) founded COLIPI in Hamburg/Germany. They are graduates of the Bioprocess Engineering program at the Hamburg University of Technology and the Management program at the Technical University of Munich. A shared passion for biotechnology and carbon utilization defines their vision to industrialize university-born scientific theories. High-purity 13C-isotope-labeled molecules mark their first commercial portfolio before expanding into broader industrial markets.

Our Technology

Biotechnology is the premier carbon-utilization strategy for creating complex molecules such as sugars, proteins, and triglycerides. COLIPI utilizes chemolithoautotrophic, hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) to transform carbon dioxide into high-value products, as these microbes have proven to be more productive and reliable than algal-based processes. 

Operating with aerobic HOB required the development of a proprietary, purpose-built process and bioreactor system designed to safely manage precise hydrogen and oxygen gas mixtures (see patents). Through genetic optimization, our HOB strains achieve enhanced sugar and triglyceride productivity. 

At our current scale, we produce several kilograms of pure sugars per year.

Our Product

Our flagship product is uniformly labeled 13C-glucose, where all six carbon positions are substituted with stable 13C isotopes. As we advance our downstream processing capabilities and continue our genetic engineering pipelines, our product catalog will expand.
